Lighting For Coffered Ceiling

Table of Contents

Lighting for coffered ceiling is a common question among home owners who are building or renovating. The thing is, there is no right answer. But it is more a question of taste. Do you like your room to be light and bright? Or do you want to keep everything more dimly lit to create a cozy feel? Perhaps you can’t decide between either option and a dimmer setting is perfect for you.

This kitchen example is an updated beach-style where traditional meets beachy. When thinking about this style, bright and light is what it is all about. These coffered ceiling squares are far enough apart to where they have chosen to put one can light in each space. The spots that hang over the island can then be left for the pendant lights.

This gorgeous, minimalist bathroom is all about the mixture of materials. The coffered ceiling adds great drama. And with this style, non-recessed can lights were chosen. To me, they add a great detail that is often used. I found some similar, modern semi-flush mount can lights here if you wish to emulate this look!

Secondly, the coffered beams are placed rather closely to one another. In this way, they have chosen to skip a few gaps to keep the lighting a good distance apart. But, your personal taste matters too. It looks like they have wonderful natural light through the windows. However, at night, they will want some lighting.

Lighting For Coffered Ceiling – Family Room

This family room flows into the kitchen. In this way, they have chosen to just have can lights between the beams on both edges of the room. In the middle, they will rely on the family room light fixture as well as the kitchen island light fixtures to fill in the void.

Another fail-proof method is to plan for less can lighting. And then turn on those lights and live with it for a few days. If you feel like it is lacking in light, the beauty is the ability to add more!

Some may say this is not specifically a coffered ceiling. Nevertheless, this example proves a good example. Here, they have used a handful of smaller can lights. These can lights are not the original size. Perhaps this decision was made because the light fixture over the island puts off a good amount of light and they didn’t want it to be overkill.

Additionally, the smaller can lights allowed for them to be able to shine can lights directly over the kitchen sink without them being too close to the other lights, within the same coffered area.

This kitchen proves to be a splash of interest and the lighting is a very important aspect of it. I think the first way to go about this lighting assignment is to lead with the light fixtures you know you want to use. Place the accordingly. And after that, fill in the missing areas with can lights.

Although you may feel like it will be a lot going on, they have pulled this off pretty impressively. And the kitchen still feels like a cohesive unit.

Can Lights and Lamps in a Coffered Ceiling Room

Here, they have tackled a beautiful room with tone on tone. The coffered ceiling elements are the same color as the walls. A few can lights are placed around the room. But also, much needed lamp lighting is added to create that extra layer of warmth.

This is one other method to tackling the question of how many can lights to use. When in doubt, use less, because lamps will oftentimes be added to the living space. If you want more inspiration on coffered ceiling ideas, I have written an additional article here.

I hope this proved helpful on your home renovation journey!
