Down Filled Sofa Reviews – You Asked, We Delivered!

Table of Contents

This is an overview of about a half-dozen down-filled sofa reviews and their experiences with them. I like it because the stories are all encompassing. Some users have older sofas that have lasted them years and others talk about more recent sofas. All in all, down sofas have come a long way with their structure. And yet, people still like the older styles of down as well as the current ones.

Some Users Comment About Fluffing Maintenance

One user says, ‘We just purchased a sofa and chair from Ethan Allen. I came really close to buying the down-filled sofa. It was incredibly comfy. I opted out at the last minute due to all the fluffing that would be involved. Down-fill sofas tend to get that messy look after a while. Their sofa was a mix of down-fill and foam.

I did have a sofa from IKEA a few years back that was down-filled and foam. Not as comfy as the Ethan Allen sofa but what I didnt like was that sometimes the feathers poke through and you have to pulled them out. The feathers poking through can hurt if they stick you the wrong way.’

Ethan Allen Website: Monterrey Sofa Details- Feather Blend

The GREAT news about this particular sofa is that the feathers are said to be encased in a protective cotton to prevent the feathers from poking. Furthermore, it is a feather blend of part down and part other feathers to help with sitting attributes.

Ethan Allen states the below details for their sofa:

-Our luxurious feather-blend cushions combine plush feathers and down encased in 100-percent cotton down-proof ticking.

-Horizontal channels in back pillows minimize fill shift and settling. To prevent pressure punctures, nonwoven ticking allows air to escape during use.

Positive Down Filled Sofa Reviews and Sofa Lasted 18 Years

An owner from Kansas City, says, ‘In the 60s my parents had a down filled couch. They had it from 1960 until at least 1978 or so. Anyway, it was very comfy but you had to fluff the cushions (seat and backs) every day.’Just to give you a better visual, I’ve enclosed a retro sofa here, to remind you of the good ole days!

Different Fill Styles of Down Sofas

This is an interesting tid-bit that segregates nicer down filled sofas from lesser ones:

One user states, ‘Are the pillows totally down, with no other filler? If so, it must have been a really expensive couch! Old, expensive sofas used to have down filled cushions. I never encountered one, but I’ve read about them a bit.’

Down Filled Sofa Reviews – Details About Feathers

Another user says, ‘Not sure about Robert Michael sofas, but I had down filled sofa and it was absolutely incredible. It was quite firm with lots of filling. Didn’t lost the shape. BTW: They must have used large feathers (cheaper than down) as their quills break through the ticking, and poke the user. For large feather filling, leather covers are the best. Down does not poke thru the fabric as its quills are soft.’

Emma Sofa from Burke Decor

It sounds as if these reviews are leading us to an important take-away. And that is, a luxury more modern down filled sofa is one that is enveloped in down feathers, but where the core of the sofa cushion is foam. And that perfect combo can be found in the Emma sofa from Burke Decor.

Here is this description, from their website, of the Emma Sofa:

Cushions: Standard seat cushions are made specifically from a high density, hypo-allergenic cloud nine 2-pound HR foam. This foam outperforms other foams by 10 – 15 times. The foam is then enveloped by a 10/90 white goose/down fill with a zipper enclosure. This construction allows for excellent shape retention with no “pancake” effect. The standard back cushion are 60% 90/10 (90% white goose feathers and 10% down) and 40% micro clusters which will maintain the shape of the cushion. The cushions will relax and provide the comfort and support Moss Home is known fo

Fabulous Down Filled Sofa Reviews – Owner For 50 Years!

Another owner comments, ‘I’ve got a down cushion sofa that I call the Napsnatcher. Every time I lie down on that thing, I fall asleep, even if I’m not tired or am trying to stay awake to read or watch TV. It is 7 feet of utter bliss. My mom bought it about 50 years ago, it’s been recovered 4-5 times, and the cushion restuffed/redone twice in that time. I don’t know the mfr, but it’s a very well made sofa even though it looks quite dainty. There are no back pillows– it’s button tufted — so the only fluffing is the one big seat cushion. Love. it’

George Smith Sofa Reviews

‘I have a George Smith down cushion sofa that I bought second hand a couple of years ago. As long as I plump the cushions up each day it stays in wonderful condition and is the most comfortable sofa I’ve ever owned. My seat pads aren’t baffled so I give them quite a beating to make sure the down is well fluffed.’

Vintage Baker Sofa – Down Filled Sofa Review

It is all about the old adage “you get what you pay for”. My mom bought a Baker sofa in 1952 with all down cushions. When we sold her home in 2007 we finally broke the sofa apart and that was it. She had it reupholstered over the years and always paid extra for the better down. That was the most comfortable sofa I have ever seen. I got all down too, and mine is holding up vey well and is very comfortable.

Robert Michael Sectional – Down Filled, User Review

This owner of a Robert Michael Sectional comments, ‘So I just spent the morning pulling all the covers off the cushions and fluffing the down and thought to myself, I need someone to remind me, no matter how comfortable, I should NEVER buy a down filled couch again. Don’t get me wrong, I love my Robert Michael sectional but I live in a one bedroom condo and this sectional belongs in a family room, not a living room. At least not a living room that you want to look clean and pulled together. I’ve had my sectional for almost 7 years and it is still in good shape, but it is high maintenance. I had mine special ordered with a tweed like fabric. If I could go back and do it again I’d pick a light color canvas or denim type material. I think it would help hold the shape better and have cleaner lines. All in all it really is the most comfortable couch I’ve ever owned, just wish I had a bigger house with a family room’

However, special note is that Robert Michael sectionals are no longer manufactured! If you go to their website, they do have other options that will direct you to other furniture websites.
